1998 Advancement Services Salary Survey Results

This page contains the summary of the Advancement Services Salary Survey performed in May-June of 1998. Most of the input came from institutions on either the Fund Services or Fund List listservs. Input was solicited confidentially and 54 institutions provided information. As the institutions all requested confidentiality, no detail information is being made available.

Summary Information

To put the responses in context, following is some general information about the respondents:
bulletForty-three (about 80%) were colleges and universities. There were 6 foundations, 2 independent schools, 1 medical center, and 2 others.
bulletBy their nature, Foundations reported Advancement Services budgets larger than other institutions. They reported their A/S budgets at between 2% and nearly 40% of the Foundation budgets; that budget sometimes included the Controllers office and the Annual Fund.
bulletThe largest Advancement Services budget reported by other than a foundation was $1.2M which represented about .12% of the institutions budget.
bulletThe largest Institution budget reported was over $1.5 B; their A/S budget was about .06% of the institution budget.
bulletOf the (non-foundation) institutions reporting total and A/S budgets, those reporting an A/S budget over $350M typically represented about .06% to .19% of the institution budget. Those reporting an A/S budget under $350M typically showed that as .22% to .78% of the institutions budget.
bulletFor all institutions reporting both A/S staff and users, the following staff ratios (e.g., users/staff) were seen:
Staff Level High Low Typical
>= 10 staff 12.5 3.2 5-7
<10 staff 20 3.2 6-10

Top Advancement Services Position

bulletThe reported salary range for the top Advancement Services position ranged from a low of $22,000 to a high of $90,000, with an average salary of $51,500.
Range Count
$90,000 2
$80-89,999 4
$70-79,999 4
$60-69,999 8
$50-59,999 10
$40-49,999 11
$30-39,999 10
$22-29,999 5

To make that more meaningful and useful, consider the following information:

bulletThirty-eight (70%) of the top positions had the area that they were responsible for reported as Advancement Services/Operations/Info Systems, or Development Services/Operations/Info Systems, or Alumni & Development Services, or Information Services/Systems. (For those of you who are trying to figure out a name for your area, pick one of the combinations above.)
bulletTen of the top Advancement Services positions were also the heads of the Development or Advancement operations or the President or VP of the Foundation. In other words, Advancement Services staff reported to a more senior position in the absence of a Director or Manager of Advancement Services position.
bulletTwelve of the top positions (22%) reported having responsiblity for all of the areas detailed in the survey (i.e., Gift processing, Bio maintenance, Files, Reports, Research, Technical Support and Administration.) Many of these also reported having responsibility for:
bulletAnnual Fund and/or Telemarketing
bulletEvents
bulletStewardship
bulletCommunications and Publications
bulletGrant Writing and Proposals
bulletSeven (13%) reported having responsibility for all areas but administration. Another 9 (17%) reported having responsiblity for all but one other area. So for a total of over 50% of the respondents, the top position had responsibility for all but one of the areas surveyed and many of these had responsibilities for other areas.
bulletAs you would expect, the higher paid positions were predominantly from the institutions with larger institutional and A/S budgets and were the positions with the greatest responsibilities. For example, two of the top three highest paid positions also had responsibility for the Annual Fund at their institutions.
bulletNineteen institutions reported only a single management position; three of these indicated that there was only one person in Advancement Services. The range of salaries for this single position was from $22-56,000 and the average reported for these institutions was about $37,000.

Other Positions

bulletThe reported salary range for other Advancement Services position ranged from a low of $18,000 to a high of $71,000. No average salary was computed because of the difference in positions. The range of salaries for these other 88 positions were:
Range Count
$71,000 1
$60-69,999 3
$50-59,999 8
$40-49,999 25
$30-39,999 27
$20-29,999 23
$18-19,999 1

Note that some respondents included non supervisory positions.

Specific positions broke out as follows:

Position Average High Low
2nd Level Manager 45,400 63,000 30,000
Gifts Manager 33,950 60,000 24,000
Bio Manager 29,000 37,500 24,000
Records Mgr 32,000 40,000 20,000
Research Mgr 35,100 48,000 24,500
Tech Support Mgr 44,700 71,000 25,200
Admin Mgr 42,900 55,000 34,000

Comments on the position analysis:
bulletThe identification of a Second Level Manager was mine based on overall survey input from an institution. (If a position other than the top position had multiple areas reporting to it and the institution had other area managers, I called it a Second Level Manager.)
bulletAlso about a dozen institutions had a single manager responsible for both Gift and Bio records; I reported that above as a Records Manager.
bulletReporting responsibilities were spread evenly among Gift, Bio, Reseach, and Technical Support Managers; no one reported having a Reports Manager.
bulletThe Administrative Manager positions included Controllers and Finance Managers that reported in the A/S chain of command.

Thanks to a number of folks who have pointed out that this page changed (losing some information) from last year to this. Now back to the more detailed version.
